What is osteoarthritis?

Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis, caused by wear and tear of cartilage. It typically affects the knees, hips, hands, and spine.

How Osteoarthritis Develops

Cartilage (smooth tissue covering bones) gradually wears away, causing pain, stiffness, and inflammation. It usually develops slowly over years. Risk factors: age, female sex, previous injury, obesity, family history.

Symptoms

Joint pain (especially with activity), stiffness (especially morning), swelling, reduced movement, creaking sounds, pain in bad weather.

Treatment

Pain relief, anti-inflammatory drugs, injections, exercise, weight management, heat therapy. Surgery for severe cases.

Can It Be Prevented?

No guaranteed prevention, but manage weight, stay active, protect joints from injury, eat well, and manage related conditions.
