Do I need a walking stick or a crutch?

For arthritis in one hip or knee, a walking stick in the OPPOSITE hand reduces joint load by up to 25% — this is the standard NHS/physio recommendation. Crutches (elbow crutches usually) are for temporary post-surgery use or for people with weakness or balance issues affecting both legs. Get sized properly: the handle should reach your wrist when you stand with your arms by your sides.

Frequently asked questions

When would you pick Walking stick (single)?

Osteoarthritis in one knee or hip; occasional support; balance help.

When would you pick Elbow crutches?

Post-op recovery; bilateral weakness; when a stick doesn't give enough support.

What should I be careful about?

See a physiotherapist for correct sizing and gait — bad technique makes joint pain worse, not better.
