Should I try yoga or Pilates for arthritis?

Both improve mobility and pain, but Pilates is generally easier to modify for arthritis because it emphasises controlled, low-range movement and core strength. Yoga is more varied — 'gentle', 'chair' or 'restorative' yoga are arthritis-friendly, but avoid Ashtanga, hot yoga, and any deep joint-loading poses. Look for an instructor with disability or older-adult experience.

Frequently asked questions

When would you pick Pilates (mat or reformer)?

Core weakness; back pain; want measured, controlled progression.

Stiffness; stress and mood benefits; balance work; enjoy mindfulness.

What should I be careful about?

Skip any class that pushes 'no pain no gain' — arthritis-friendly practice should never sharply hurt.
