What is Naproxen 500mg?
Naproxen 500mg is a prescription-strength dose of the NSAID naproxen. While lower doses (220–250mg) are available over the counter for mild pain and fever, the 500mg dose is typically prescribed by a doctor for more significant inflammatory conditions such as arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, gout, and moderate to severe musculoskeletal pain.
When is it Prescribed?
- Rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis
- Gout attacks
- Ankylosing spondylitis
- Bursitis and tendonitis
- Post-surgical pain and inflammation
- Severe menstrual pain
- Acute musculoskeletal injuries
Dosage
The usual starting dose is 500mg twice daily (morning and evening), giving a total of 1,000mg per day. Some conditions may be treated with 500mg three times daily. The maximum daily dose on prescription is 1,500mg. Always take it with food or milk to reduce the risk of stomach upset.
Stomach Protection
Because naproxen 500mg is a higher dose taken regularly, your doctor will often prescribe a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) such as omeprazole alongside it to protect the stomach lining and reduce the risk of stomach ulcers.
Important Considerations
- Do not combine with other NSAIDs (ibuprofen, aspirin for pain)
- Monitor blood pressure — NSAIDs can raise it
- Use with caution in older adults and those with kidney or heart problems
- Not suitable for people with active stomach ulcers
