What is MSM?
Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) is a naturally occurring sulphur compound found in plants, animals, and humans. It is a popular dietary supplement, often used to help manage joint pain, reduce inflammation, and support overall health. MSM is found naturally in small amounts in certain foods including garlic, onions, cruciferous vegetables, and milk, but the amounts in food are generally too small to have a therapeutic effect — hence the popularity of supplements.
How Does it Work?
MSM provides biologically active sulphur, which is an important component of proteins, collagen, and antioxidants in the body. Sulphur is essential for the formation and repair of connective tissues. MSM is also thought to have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects, helping to reduce pain and inflammation in joints.
Potential Benefits
- Reduces joint pain — research suggests MSM may significantly reduce pain in osteoarthritis
- Decreases inflammation — may lower levels of inflammatory markers
- Improves exercise recovery — may reduce muscle soreness after exercise
- Supports skin health — may improve skin texture and reduce wrinkles
- Immune support — antioxidant properties may help strengthen the immune system
- Allergy relief — some evidence it may reduce allergic responses
Dosage and Safety
MSM is generally considered safe and well-tolerated. The typical dose used in research is 1–3 grams per day. Side effects are rare but can include mild digestive upset. There is currently no established tolerable upper limit, but high doses should be used with caution. MSM is generally safe alongside other medications, but it is always advisable to check with a pharmacist.
