What are the best ways to manage arthritis pain?

A combination approach works best: medication, exercise, heat/cold, lifestyle changes, and psychological support.

Medication

Over-the-counter: paracetamol, ibuprofen. Prescription: stronger painkillers, anti-inflammatories, DMARDs for autoimmune types. Discuss with GP.

Physical Methods

Heat/cold, massage, acupuncture, TENS machines, splints, ergonomic equipment. Different things work for different people.

Movement & Exercise

Gentle exercise reduces pain long-term more than rest. Walking, swimming, yoga, strength training. Start gently.

Psychological Support

Pain is partly psychological. Stress increases pain. Meditation, mindfulness, CBT, counselling, support groups all help pain.
